Fat Loss Pro
is it possible to lose interest in tumblr after only two months of use

About your “Win Some; Lose Some” post: This is one of the reasons why I follow certain people on Tumble. It’s because I’ll receive something like your post on my dashboard. Even though I love Tumblr, it’s obviously less of a blog and more of a nerd dumpster. Users throw things in it, make little blurbs, reblog other people’s junk, etc. (I do this, too). I like it when people use it to express their stories, rants, ideas, opinions, in more than just a few sentences. I like the longer posts because, like a full meal, it can be fulfilling. I also like that some people have the balls to post it on Tumblr, because it’s just going to be quickly shoved back into their archives, probably never to be seen again unless it’s reblogged. Thanks for that wonderful story.

You’re welcome. And thanks. It’s nice to know that someone read it.

I love the “fun” of Tumblr, and I too am guilty of occasionally scrolling past the TL;DR posts, and of course on Tumblr “TL;DR” might be not that long at all, depending on where I’m reading — which reminds me, I really wish there was support for Instapaper’s “Read Later” right next to dashboard posts that exceeded a certain number of words. Paging Marco!

Sometimes I eyeroll Tumblr when “put the word ‘Vagina’ in your Tumblr name” gets 5,300 “notes” but I have to admit it made me laugh.

(Aside: if OneSmallVagina isn’t your favorite, might I suggest “FunSizeVagina” as a strong contender? “VaginaSizeBytes” sounds like a horror movie. Or a documentary about clams. Definitely one of those.)

I find myself wanting to write more longer, more substantial posts, and then a) wondering if anyone would actually read them and b) wondering if I’d actually write them.

That said, your comment reminded me that I had intended to use Tales of Being TJ for longer posts (and then post a link to them on FSB). I should do that, and if you’d like to read longer posts from me, that’d be another place to look.

Long Answer Short: Thanks :-)

The spelling / grammar commenting on the picture is ridiculous. Not everyone in the FA community is working on a PhD (cough Margitte cough), but prose is, by and large, articulate and polished. Also, most FA people find the term “obesity” problematic. (The use of the term “obesity” is in and of itself medicalization of fat. I, along with many fat activists, want to challenge that.)

Curious about the genesis of such a picture, I found the source. This was originally published here, and it’s been reblogged from there. Based on the About Me section of the original tumblr, it’s not her original photo or her body. Looking at the commentary attached to the picture from the original post, it’s decidedly not FA. Jeffchord had the chutzpah to stand up for this girl (“NEWS FLASH: IT’S STILL NOT YOUR BODY THEREFORE NONE OF YOUR FUCKING CONCERN!”), but only after a long string of fat-is-gross comments.

Like most things, this is complicated. The person who took this picture probably didn’t want it so publicly available on the internet. Someone found it and shared it, and it got out of hand. If that was malicious, the vindictive side of me wishes for retribution when looking for a job, dating someone new, or in public office. With respect to the rest of the nasty commentary, I know people are going to be vile on the internet when we can hide behind anonymity and physical distance. Just think of all of the terrible things we say to other drivers in our cars that we wouldn’t say if we were walking. I want people to be nicer, but I know that we will only act nice after we have learned to accept fat people and fat bodies. That’s hard, and it’s going to take some time.

As for naked pictures of fat people, fat people need more visibility. The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University has a catalog of photos of fat people doing normal and healthy things (picking out produce, exercising, being at work etc.). Leonard Nimoy published a book of fat women looking hot and naked-ish (The Full Body Project). Adipositivy publishes nude photos of fat people not looking “ugly.” All of these projects visibilize a fat body as a worthy and beautiful body and are important. The typical image of a fat person is either filled with shame— like the montages on the news where fat people waddle without faces— or full of mockery— like the images found at “People of Walmart.” Fat people deserve more than disgust and mockery, so we should have a media presence that reflects a whole and complete human experience.

I hope that the woman who took this picture took it because she felt fierce. All people— regardless of size, ability, appearance— deserve to feel awesome and take sexy pictures of themselves. However, the picture is out there and receiving ridicule (not “I’m a married congressman and should exercise more judgement before putting pictures out there” ridicule, but “I’m fat and thus I am not a sexual or worthy human being” ridicule), and that’s fucked up.

If, however, she took the picture as a way to impress a man (and not because of reciprocal pleasure), knock it the fuck off. I know it’s all “post-feminist” to take naked pictures, sleep around, and be slutty because you can. But knock it the fuck off. If you’re sleeping around because you want to, it makes you happy, and you enjoy it— I’ll buy you a box of condoms to celebrate your decisions. If you’re doing this because you want the attention of men, you’re part of the patriarchy (and thus worthy of Feminist Hulk’s SMASH!!). Your worth doesn’t come from the number of men who find you fuckable, so spend your time and energy doing something better and meaningful.

Take care of her?

I took a look and read the comments. I think people covered all the bases I would have, including the fact that encouraging people to love their bodies is not the same as encouraging people to sit around and stuff their faces.

Besides, anyone who compares fatness with heroin use should just be ignored. They aren’t interested in a logical discussion at all.

Thanks for the tip!

Peace,
Shannon

Today I got this question in my ask box:

I just saw this while searching ‘fat acceptance’ on tumblr…thoughts? I find some of it problematic but it’s interesting.
